In 1880 William Gibb Stuart established himself in the villages of Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire as an Ironmonger, Painter and Decorator. The business was successful and thrived up to World War I when four sons enlisted, one of whom was killed in action and another was badly wounded. His son, also William Gibb Stuart, despite his war wounds managed to grow the business through the difficulties of the twenties and thirties and by 1939 had made it a thriving business employing about 30 staff.
World War II caused everyone problems and sadly three of the brightest young men on the staff were lost. His son Hugh Gibb Stuart returned from war service in 1947 and with his brother James struggled through the post war period, materials and stock were in short supply. Eventually things improved, but retailing had changed considerably and our old premises were unsuitable for modern methods and self selection which the new supermarkets had introduced so successfully.
After 8 weary years with planning we were able to build a purpose built store which was opened in 1993, this is now being run by the fourth generation, with help from the fifth, who have introduced up to date systems and this website. Through depressions, recessions, wars, boom and busts Gibb Stuarts has carried on doing what it is best at, providing dependable, helpful, friendly service to the community and through the wonders of the internet we hope you will enjoy what 134 years of business experience has to offer.
